Officially coming to the last week before Christmas!
Christmas is clearly a big thing in London, well, for the entire Europe actually. People in fact start to gear up for Christmas even before December, putting up decorations, setting up trees at home, organising parties, Christmas menu, etc – that's how much people here love Christmas. Lights are up, sales are on, the entire city is literally lit up. There's just nowhere better than London for Christmas.
Quite shameful though, I have in fact never really spent Christmas in London. Every year, I would fly home straight away after my term ended. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Christmas in Hong Kong and indeed most of my sweetest memories happened during Christmas in Hong Kong. However, this year, I have decided to stay and do something different. So don't forget to follow my instagram and tune in to #FollowDearPostmanToChristmas!
Having mentioned some sweetest memories during Christmas in Hong Kong, never ever will I forget my Secret Santa experiences – you know what I mean. A wall hanger, and a hot water bottle, and then a mini fan (which comes with a bottle of free water as well), from the same person for 3 years' secret santa in a row, (and guys!), to the same other person every year. I mean, can you believe that? FYI, every year we have a new way of drawing names, like pick one and pass to the right twice whatever, that present still eventually goes to the same person. Like a Love Rosie situation – it's meant to be.
The problem about Secret Santa is that you might not know that person very well, or he/she might be the opposite sex, or sometimes it's a lucky draw situation. You just don’t know what to get. To avoid any embarrassing situation, for the 2018 Christmas Gift Guide, we are not doing a HIM or HER, but a Secret Santa Gift Guide for all price ranges! What about that?
Around $300 or below
Room diffuser (HIM & HER)
No one can have too much room diffuser. Getting a nice flavour shows that you have a taste, you are classy and you care. You might be surprised how most people underestimate the importance of a good diffuser even though that's the first thing they breathe in when they enter a room.
Socks set (HIM)
Socks sets are the best if the HIM you've got is a work colleague. And unless he has massive feet or tiny feet, socks are normally not size-specific and save you from any embarrassing it-doesn’t-fit situation. Go ahead for all the crazy bold patterns and colours, trust me, guys love them.
Bear in mind if you are a HIM and got a SHE. Not all girls wear socks plus socks as gift may send out the wrong message.
Game sets (HIM & HER)
I LOVE to play games – cards, poker, mah-jong, monopoly, you name it. You will know what I mean if you love games too. Trust me, having a delicate set of games is just another level, it just gets everyone into the mood right away.
Recommendation: John Lewis all-in-one
PJ set (HER)
If you happen to get your bff's name, get her a nice cosy warm PJ set / robe. Honestly every time I get new PJ I am really happy. Step the game up by personalising her initials too. Or just get one more set for yourself as BFF PJ, why not?
Alert: Unless she is your girl, getting a girl PJ is just wrong. So guys, don't.
Pampering products (HIM & HER)
Whenever I need to get a gift, the first island I will be checking out will be the beauty session. Either the Jo Malone body scrub or the Byredo grooming products, they never disappoint. And the good thing is that they often do the prettiest packaging, so one less thing to worry about.
Wireless charger pad (HIM & HER)
A wireless charger pod is the kind of thing you thought would be unnecessary when you don't have one, and become so important when you have one. Get one if you don't trust me.
Recommendation: Apple, Xiaomi Mi 8
Wine (HIM & HER)
This is not the easiest gift to pick and I admit I did get some help from my friends. As a lot of you know I am not a drinker myself, but, having one or two nice wine as stand by in the house never turns out to be a bad idea. You never know when you will expect a surprise visitor.
Perfume (HIM & HER)
I love perfume and I admit almost every year one of my presents will be a perfume. I love them all. It kinda lets me know what and how that person thinks of me. And also even if I don't use them, having them sit around the house just looks extremely cute.
Recommendation for HER: Atelier Cologne Orange Sanguine, Maison Margiela Replica Lazy Sunday Morning Eau de Toilette, BYREDO gypsy water
Recommendation for HIM: ARMANI ACQUA DI GIÒ ESSENZA, Calvin Klein eternity, D&G light blue
Glassware (HIM & HER)
Coming to this, I really think I have aged. Never ever would I recommend homeware 2 years ago and honestly I would have said NO MUGS NO GLASSES. But now, I would be really happy indeed if I receive nice glassware. A glass for water, a glass for wine, a glass for the morning cereal, there are a lot of knowledge in it. With some nice glassware it does show some class in them. I am not an expert but it's a definitely bingo for me if he/she has a good glassware taste.
Around $1500 or above
Google HOME (HIM & HER)
I don’t have a Google helper myself but I can tell you I am very lazy and would love everything voice-controllable. Lights off, curtain down, play music – argh I need it just so I don’t have to leave my bed to do them manually.
Airpods (HIM & HER)
Just like the wireless charger pod, I spend days keeping them safe and worrying I would lose one or drop another one when I thought they were so extra before I actually had them. And one of the best gifts I have ever received indeed.
Unisex sweater (HIM & HER)
Can anyone get enough sweaters? I don't know because I can’t. It's becoming ridiculous how many I buy every year but whenever I see a nice colour or nice pattern I will want it. Bear in mind though if you don't know that person very well, it could be quite tricky with the size and the pattern. Keep it simple I would say, being adventurous is not for Secret Santas.
Disclaimer: the list above are just things I really like and it may not be the same for everyone. I hope it helps. Also, don't forget to share your best or worst Secret Santa experience with DearPostman in the comment box and subscribe to our newsletter below!
